Afghanistan may soon have its first female supreme court judge.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani nominated Anisa Rasooli to be one of nine supreme court justices, making Rasooli the first woman to receive this honor.
The nomination, announced at a gathering of diplomats and women's rights activists, must first be approved by the Afghan parliament.
There has already been opposition to the announcement. The Afghan Ulemas Council, a group of clerics, called a meeting with President Ghani to protest the nomination.
Rasooli is highly qualified for the job. She is a founding member and director of the Afghan Women Judges Association and was previously the head of the Juvenile Appellate Division juvenile court in Kabul.
She has also won numerous accolades from national and international judges organizations.
Despite the opposition, President Ghani has expressed his dedication to putting more women in government positions. At the meeting where he made the announcement, Rasooli said he wanted all Afghan ministries to appoint female deputy ministers.
In Rasooli's own administration, he has so far appointed four female cabinet members. He has also appointed two female province governors.
